Acupuncture and Pregnancy

pregnant-womanAcupuncture has many benefits in pregnancy and in preparing for labour. It can help relieve fatigue and morning sickness in the early weeks and alleviate back pain/sciatica, pelvic pain (pubis symphysis) haemorrhoids (piles) and indigestion later in pregnancy.

To prepare for labour, we recommend a weekly program of “pre-birth” acupuncture as you approach your due date (from about 35 weeks). Research shows that this type of acupuncture program can reduce the need for interventions, encouraging a smoother, more efficient labour.

Ann uses various styles of Acupuncture to help with the following pregnancy-related issues (other issues also respond – you are always welcome to call to discuss your specific needs):

• Morning sickness
• Tiredness/exhaustion
• Anxiety
• Insomnia
• Swollen ankles and fingers
• Carpal tunnel syndrome
• Indigestion, acid reflux
• Pelvic pain
• Sciatica and low back pain
• Breech baby and other malpositions
• High blood pressure
• Induction (in some circumstances)

Acupuncture also helps you recover from labour and promotes the flow of breast milk. It can also help relieve mastitis.

Ann is very experienced in working with women at all stages of pregnancy and after birth. Acupuncture treatments are eligible for health-fund rebates.
